Fourth-generation fighter jets are highly maneuverable, multirole combat aircraft developed from the 1970s to the 1990s, emphasizing agility, advanced avionics, and beyond-visual-range missile capabilities. They feature fly-by-wire control systems, powerful engines, and aerodynamic designs such as relaxed stability and delta or swept wings, allowing superior dogfighting performance and versatility in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. These fighters, including aircraft like the F-15, F-16, Su-27, and MiG-29, introduced modern radar systems, precision-guided weapons, and multirole adaptability, bridging the gap between earlier gun- and missile-focused fighters and today’s stealthy, networked fifth-generation jets.

The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine, multirole fighter and attack aircraft developed for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, capable of operating from aircraft carriers. Introduced in the 1980s, it combines air-to-air combat agility with precision strike capabilities, supported by advanced avionics, radar, and weapons systems. Its design emphasizes reliability, carrier suitability, and multirole flexibility, allowing it to perform fighter, attack, reconnaissance, and close-air-support missions. With its versatility, durability, and proven combat record, the F/A-18 has become a cornerstone of naval aviation and continues to serve in upgraded forms like the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The Su-35 “Flanker-E” is a highly advanced, single-seat, twin-engine Russian multirole fighter developed as an upgraded derivative of the Su-27. Featuring thrust-vectoring engines, advanced avionics, and a modern radar system, it offers exceptional maneuverability, supercruise capability, and long-range strike potential. Designed for both air superiority and precision ground attack, the Su-35 can carry a wide array of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons while performing in complex combat environments. Its combination of agility, firepower, and cutting-edge systems makes it one of the most capable fourth-generation-plus fighters in service today.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a highly agile, twin-engine multirole fighter developed by a European consortium to perform air superiority and ground-attack missions. Featuring advanced avionics, a digital fly-by-wire system, and canard-delta wing design, it excels in maneuverability, high-speed interception, and precision strike capabilities. Equipped with modern radar, infrared sensors, and a versatile weapons suite, the Typhoon can engage multiple threats simultaneously in complex combat environments. Operational since the early 2000s, it represents a cutting-edge European response to modern aerial warfare, combining speed, agility, and multirole flexibility in a single platform.

The F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, two-seat naval fighter and interceptor developed for the U.S. Navy, introduced in the 1970s to provide fleet air defense. Its distinctive variable-sweep wings allowed it to excel in both high-speed interception and low-speed maneuverability, while advanced radar and long-range Phoenix missiles gave it formidable beyond-visual-range capabilities. The F-14 could also perform air-to-ground strike missions, reconnaissance, and fleet protection roles. Renowned for its combination of speed, versatility, and iconic design, the Tomcat became a symbol of U.S. naval aviation until its retirement in 2006.
