The Salt Lake Temple, stands as the iconic centerpiece of Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, serving as a sacred house of God for essential ordinances such as baptisms for the dead, endowments, eternal marriage sealings, and other rituals. Construction began in 1853 under Brigham Young, just years after the Mormon pioneers' arrival in the Salt Lake Valley, with groundbreaking on February 14, 1853, and dedication on April 6–24, 1893—exactly 40 years later—after decades of labor using massive quartz monzonite granite blocks quarried from Little Cottonwood Canyon and transported by oxen and later rail. Designed by architect Truman O. Angell in a Gothic-Romanesque style, the temple features six spires symbolizing priesthood quorums, the Angel Moroni statue atop the east center spire, and rich symbolic elements including sun, moon, and star stones representing degrees of glory, the all-seeing eye, beehive, clasped hands, and the Big Dipper pointing to the North Star. It has endured significant events like bombings, a 1999 tornado, and a 2020 earthquake that damaged the Moroni statue (later repaired), and as of January 2026, it remains closed for extensive renovations started in 2019, focusing on seismic retrofitting to withstand major earthquakes, interior reconfiguration for greater capacity, and modernization, with completion projected by the end of 2026 and a public open house planned for April to October 2027.
