The Nauvoo Temple, the second temple constructed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (following the Kirtland Temple), was announced in 1840 and its cornerstone laid on April 6, 1841, in Nauvoo, Illinois, under the direction of church founder Joseph Smith. Built in the Greek Revival style with distinctive symbolic features like sunstones, moonstones, and starstones representing celestial glory, the temple was a focal point for introducing and performing sacred ordinances including baptisms for the dead, eternal marriage sealings, and the endowment, amid intense persecution and the Saints' sacrifices of time, labor, and resources through tithing and consecrated efforts. Construction progressed slowly, with partial dedications allowing ordinances to begin in the attic and basement by 1845–1846; a public dedication occurred on May 1, 1846, by Orson Hyde, just as most church members were forced to flee Nauvoo westward due to mob violence and threats. Abandoned shortly after, the original structure was destroyed by arson fire in October 1848 and further ruined by a tornado in 1850. In a remarkable act of historical restoration, church president Gordon B. Hinckley announced its rebuilding in 1999; the Nauvoo Illinois Temple, an exterior replica of the original but with a modern interior layout, was dedicated on June 27, 2002—the 158th anniversary of Joseph and Hyrum Smith's martyrdom—serving today as a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and redemption overlooking the Mississippi River.
